Location
Mogilev region is the most eastern region of Belarus, which borders
upon the Russian Federation. Smolensk and Bryansk regions of Russia
are our eastern neighbours. This region borders upon Vitebsk region
in the north, Minsk region in the west, and Gomel region of Belarus
in the south.
Territory
The territory of the region is 29.1 thousand square meters.
The region has deposits of different mineral resources, including
phosphorite which is unique for Belarus. The region has the country’s
largest deposits of raw cement (chalk, marl, clay, and cement loam),
large deposits of mortar and silicate sands, sand-gravel mixtures,
peat, sapropel, mineral water. The eastern part is a place where
huge deposits of mineral – rotten stone of high technological properties–
are concentrated.
Over 30% of the territory are covered with forests, coniferous forests
mainly. South-east of the region is especially woody, more than
50% in certain areas.
Population
More than 1.55 million people live in Mogilev region. Density of
the population is 40 people per 1 square kilometer.

Transport corridors
Mogilev region takes an important place in the Republic of Belarus
both by its geographic location and industrial potential. Located
in the junction of Russia and the European Union, the region is
a connecting link between the West and the East. Important transport
communications run across the region.
Economics of the region
At present 268 industrial enterprises are operating in

Mogilev region is the main manufacturer of tyres, electric engines,
rotary pumps, cement, silk fabric, curtain lace, rubber footwear.
Mogilev, Bobruisk, Krichev, Osipovichy are the largest industrial
centers of the region.
Chemical and petrochemical industries play the leading part. Share

Public Joint Stock Company and Belshina
Public Joint Stock Company , the two largest chemical enterprises,
makes more than 25% of the total production output of the region.
In 2008, in the industrial structure of the complex chemistry and
petrochemistry is 31,2%, machine building and metal processing -
18,7%, food industry - 18,6% -11,2% electricity, building materials
industry - 7,7%, light industry - 4,9%, timber, woodworking and
pulp and paper industry - 3% and other industries - 4,6%.
Potential of Mogilevchimvolokno
Public Joint Stock Company, the Europe largest enterprise involved
in chemical fiber manufacture, has been retained. Due to wide range
and quality of products that meets the world highest standards,
this enterprise has penetrated the markets of 40 countries of the
world, gained reputation of a reliable business partner. It cooperates
with 1500 enterprises and companies in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine,
Germany, Austria, Czechia, China and other countries. It was decorated
with the Golden Star of the International Elimination Commission
in Madrid; prestigious international price – Ach of Europe – “for
immense contribution to the world business, for high status and
professionalism”.
In the 90s, Belpack Joint Belarusian-American Venture was established
on Mogilevchimvolokno
basis, which is the only manufacturer of edible polyethylene-terephthalat
(PET-granular) in Belarus.
Belshina
Public Joint Stock Company is one of the Europe largest enterprises
that produces more than 200 dimension-types of tyres. The enterprise
holds one of the leading positions in production of tyres for heavy
haulers (from 25 to 180 tons) that have gained good reputation during
their maintenance in mining quarries in all climatic zones. Belshina
Public Joint Stock Company was awarded with Ach of Europe international
prices for its superiority in corporate image, and the Golden Globe
for competition and quality of its products.
Mogilevtransmach Plant, the branch of the Minsk Automobile Plant
Production Republican Unitary Enterprise, is a modern highly developed
enterprise established on the base of Mogilevtransmach Public Joint
Stock Company in February 2005. The Plant manufactures truck cranes,
special construction equipment on truck chassis, trailers and semi-trailers
for lorries. It operates under conditions of on-going renewal and
creation of competitive products using technological know-how.
Electrotechnical engineering of the region is represented by the
Mogilev
Elektrodvigatel Works, Republican Unitary Enterprise, which
is the CIS largest enterprise involved in manufacture of induction
motors of different power. Products of this Enterprise are well-known
in more than 50 countries. The Enterprise’s high standard was certified
by different awards, the International Brilliant Quality Star including.
The Mogilev Strommachina Works, Republican Unitary Enterprise,
operates stably, and is currently involved in manufacture of equipment
for production of construction materials (more than 400 main types
of machines) and consumer goods. More than 30 countries (CIS, France,
Germany, India, Hungary, Czechia, Iraq, etc.) use the equipment
produced by the Works.
Mogilevliftmach
Republican Unitary Enterprise is a specialized enterprise that
produces a broad range of elevators. In 1999, it was the first in
the country to certify its elevators’ design and manufacture quality
system for conformity to STB ISO 9001. Elevators of this enterprise
of Mogilev function in all CIS member-states, including Baikonur
rocket-extraterrestrial complex, as well as in 12 countries of Europe,
Asia, and America.
Mogilev
Steel Works Public Joint Stock Company produces steel electric-welded
pipes (round and shaped), water- and gas pipes, cast-iron pellets.
The main advantage of the enterprise is its constantly renewed range
of goods, maximum quality control, maintaining stable ties with
the consumers, supply of products in assorted cars within agreed
terms at reasonable prices. All these enabled the enterprise to
win the markets both in CIS member-states and foreign countries.
In December 2004 the enterprise was conferred the rank of the Laureate
of the Prize of the Government of the Republic of Belarus for progress
in quality.
Mogilev
Textile Public Joint Stock Company is the Republican largest
textiles manufacturer. It produces a broad range of cloth and knitted
fabric, is involved in clothing manufacture. On-going participation
in specialized exhibitions, fairs enables to create and exhibit
new product samples of high quality and design. Production of this
enterprise is supplied to CIS, countries of Europe, Asia and America.
Sopotex Joint Venture is one of the most modern enterprises of
the Republic involved in thread and cloth production. It produces
cotton, polyester-cotton thread of different gages. Thread quality
meets the international standards and is monitored by the unique
laboratory equipment by German companies. Moreover, the enterprise
produces lining-, waterproof-, garment- fabric, fabric for white
goods and working clothes; it sews professional clothes, uniform,
working clothes, produces silk fabric and threads. The enterprise
supplies its products to CIS, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Poland,
Switzerland, Austria, Hungary.
Lenta Public
Joint Stock Company is the CIS largest manufacturer of textile
small ware and curtains. On-going renewal of the range of goods,
using computer facilities for new patterns creation, enables to
win new markets, increase deliveries to standing partners, meet
demands of the buyers. Annually, up to 60% of curtain cloth patterns,
50% of piece goods, and over 20% of textile fancy goods are renewed.
Besides CIS member-sates, the goods are supplied to Poland, Czechia,
Baltic countries. Efforts are made to promote such goods to Sweden
and Italy. In 2002, the company was honoured with the European Quality
Class international prize in the nomination ‘Enterprise of the XX
century” for the best quality coefficients.
Mogilev Dairy Factory, Public Joint Stock Company is one of the
largest manufacturers of natural dairy products (about 200 types).
They are: whole milk products, butter, cheese (soft, semi-soft,
hard), casein, iced cheese curd, ice cream, mayonnaise, icing. Quality
system for conformity to NASSR and ISO-9000-2001 international standards
has been introduced at the enterprise. New types of products are
developed. The enterprise sells its products, using a new packing
design, new brands such as “The Grandma’s Jug”, “Cheery Grandchildren”,
and supply them to all regions of the Republic of Belarus as well
as to the regions of the Russian Federation. The Factory’s products
were marked off with numerous diplomas of the Republican and international
exhibitions and contests. In December 2005, the Factory won the
Prize of the Government of the Republic of Belarus for progress
in quality, and was presented with the diplomas of winners of two
competitions: “The Best Goods of the Republic of Belarus” and “The
Best Goods of the Republic of Belarus in the Market of the Russian
Federation”.

Industrial infrastructure of economics of Mogilev region, its production
potentialities considerably exceed demands of the domestic market
of the Republic of Belarus. Export supplies make, on average, 30-40%
of the total volume of sale of manufactured goods. The main condition
of sustainable economic development of the region is subsequent
enhancement and development of its export potential.
Advantageous geographical location, modern industrial organizations
and communication, transport cross-roads offer unlimited opportunities
for fruitful cooperation with the partners both within the country
and abroad.
Today foreign economic sector of the region is the most quickly
developing part of the economic mechanism of Mogilev region. Its
annual foreign trade turnover exceeds one billion US dollars. Within
the past years a stable trend of export supplies growth took shape.
Positive trade balance is a favourable foreign trade factor in the
region.
Commodity composition has not changed considerably within the recent
years. Textiles and textile goods (chemical fibres and threads are
the main goods), plastic and rubber goods (tyres, polyethylene-terephthalat),
machines, equipment and mechanisms (electric engines, elevators,
scrapers, bulldozers, pumps), road transport facilities (lorries,
trailers and semi-trailers) are exported from the region. Goods
of light industry and woodworking, construction materials, foodstuffs
make a significant portion of export.
Production of chemical industry, ferrous metals and goods made thereof,
resin and rubber goods prevail in structure of import.
Goods with the trade mark of Mogilev’s manufacturers are supplied
to more than 90 countries of the world and almost 80 Russian regions.
The years of stay of the Republic within the Soviet Union have
determined the main consumers of the region’s products. Even now
they dominate in the total volume of export supplies. First of all,
they are CIS member-states: Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldova,
etc. Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Italy, Latvia, USA are the main
trade partners among non CIS states

Foreign investments
Inflow of foreign investments in economics of Mogilev region is
evident. Favourable tendency toward growth of direct foreign investments
in total volume is worth mention.
Representatives of more than 20 states invest in the region annually.
Traditionally, investors from Austria, Germany, Italy, Russia, Latvia,
USA and other regions show their interest in the enterprises of
the region.
The largest share of foreign investments falls at the industrial
complex of the region. For the recent two years, over 80% of their
total amount have been invested in this branch annually.
A number of new enterprises was created in the region, including
the Belarusian Cement Works, Production republican Unitary Enterprise
(the largest Belarusian cement producer); Belatmit Foreign Joint
Stock Company, Bykhov; Shklov Forest Ltd. Foreign Limited Liability
Company; Elizovo Glass Factory, Joint Venture; Klimovichy Sleeper
Goods Unitary Enterprise, which increase their production volumes
efficiently. Efforts are made for news-print mill establishment
in Shklov.
In 2003, Belpack Joint Venture, together with foreign investors,
implemented a large investment project with a view to expand output
of edible polyethylene-terephthalat. The amount of foreign investments
made over USD 13.5 million (with Cyprus as the investor).
Several more investment projects are under implementation with participation of foreign investors. Among them the most important are as follows:
- Engineering re-equipment of production facilities of Elizovo
Glass Factory, Joint Venture. The total amount of foreign investments
for the entire period from 2002 has made USD 16 million, including
USD 6 million of direct investments.
- Modernization of facilities for brewing high-quality beer at
“Syabar Brewery Company, JSC, with participation of American capital.
The total amount made USD 15 million for 9 months of 2005 alone.
Two investment projects are under implementation at Mogilevchimvolokno
Public Joint Stock Company using credit resources to the amount
of about Euro 50 million against security of the Government..
Companies with 100% foreign capital are developing successfully,
such as Belatmit (Latvia) – the manufacturer of meat products and
half-finished products; and Shklov Forest Ltd. (Latvia, USA) involved
in woodworking; etc.
Import substitution investment project, started in 2002 by fruit-growing
Arnika Ltd Belarusian-Holland-French Company, is under implementation.
This is the first project implemented in agriculture of the region.
