The industrial potential of science-intensive machine-building
sectors, namely, instrument-making, electrical engineering, radio
engineering, electronic and optomechanical, is an integrated system
of production enterprises, research and development and designing
organizations. These subsectors managed to maintain a world technological
level and most fully correspond to the economic environment of the
country since they are oriented at using highly skilled labor, engineering
manpower and research, engineering and innovation potential.
The instrument-making industry specializes in manufacture of instruments
and instrumentation and control systems, aircraft flight and navigation
equipment, antilock brake systems and other instruments.
The radioelectronic and optomechanical industries promoted development
of new competitive lines of production. In particular, the commercial
production of submicron technology-based integrated microcircuits
has been started. Within the framework of joint Belarus-Russia programs,
the Scientific and Production Association Integral continues developing
and manufacturing specialized technological equipment for fabrication
0.5-0.25 μm very large-scale integrated circuits and a range of
state-of-the-art controlled shaping-based equipment for production
of new-generation mechanooptical and optoelectronic devices.
In the period of 2006-2010, these subsectors’ enterprises will
continue developing and pioneering a range of specialized computers
with special-purpose modules, data security, uninterruptible power
supply and microsensor systems. The software/hardware is to be further
developed and produced for automatic exchanges, wire and wireless
communication systems for digital data transmission and data security.
In addition to production of industrial products, Belarus is the
largest manufacturer of specific types of consumer goods. Horizont
and Vityaz TV sets and also Atlant refrigerators are well-known
beyond the country’s borders.
A number of governmental and scientific/technical programs are being
implemented aimed at developing and pioneering new industrial products
and consumer goods being in demand and also at improving the quality
and competitiveness of the existing products that would promote
the export, creation of new jobs and more efficient use of the available
production capacities.
